NENSA youth athletes score big in Biathlon!

A large number of NENSA skiers participated in the 2022 US Biathlon National Championships at Lake Placid/Mt. Van Hoevenberg, March 22-27. It was the largest field ever at the national event yet, with nearly 200 competitors across all categories. One NENSA-affiliated team with a strong showing was HSC Massachusetts Biathlon, which sent 11 athletes (all but one also currently in the EMXC Youth or EMXC Juniors programs). The young team–the program began in earnest about 4 years ago–had outstanding results despite dealing with tough conditions on the new Lake Placid course: Olympian Clare Egan described it as probably the most challenging biathlon course she’s skied. HSC came away with 3 gold medals (Lucas Daly, youth men sprint; Mirra Payson, U17 girls, both sprint and pursuit), a bronze (Josephine Lynch-Shaddock, U15 girls sprint), and a relay silver (Mirra and Jo, Devo girls). EMXC/HSC was not alone representing NENSA at the event, which included numerous names and faces familiar from NENSA Eastern Cup races. Skiers from U15 to Masters attended from clubs (including CGRP, SMS, EABC, FKOC) and colleges (Paul Smith, UVM) from across the region, as well as from California, Montana, and Alaska, to name a few. Canadian guests also participated. Congratulations to all medalists and competitors!
